THE STUDENT VOICE COMMITTEE – The SVC at Jacob Beidler aims to provide young people with the skills, resources, and support to be heard in the decision-making processes that impact their lives. Restorative Justice Programming

We are endeavoring to set up an unprecedented school wide, wrap around trauma support system that will provide comprehensive, dynamic mind-body based social-emotional intervention. The support structure will be multi-modal, designed to affect neurobiological healing to evince cognitive and behavioral improvement. Cameron’s population is collectively affected by complex traumas, including: poverty, transgenerational trauma, racial trauma (disenfranchisement). Additionally, many of Cameron’s students have experienced direct trauma, such as, abandonment, neglect, abuse, sexual assault, parental death or incarceration, etc. These experiences lead to internalized and/or externalized responses often distilled through patterns of disorganized attachment, loneliness, toxic shame, fear/aggression, somatic dysregulation (hyperarousal/hypervigilance), etc.  The purpose of our programming is to inspire better integration in our students’ brains and bodies. We will work with cognitions and beliefs systems that are formed after trauma, helping students with emotional wound care. We also have to work with emotions, particularly on how to help students regulate trauma-related emotions. We will also work with the body, because that’s where the trauma impacts.

EMCEE SKOOL: Hip Hop & Leadership Development

CAPOEIRA: Capoeira originated by enslaved Africans in Brazil. It is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that uses dance, acrobatics, and music. It gives the children a form of release and way to express emotions as well as keeping them physically active.

SPOKEN WORD: Youth are taught to use the art of words to express themselves. It was structured in a way to be a restorative and healing tool for them if they, or someone they know have experienced trauma.

ROCK BAND:  Music is medicine for the soul. This hip ‘n’ edgy rock band teaches children how to read and play modern music on classic instruments. Just like a real rock band they even performed at Little Kids Rock Chicago’s Jamfest in 2019!
